Isaiah 8:19—9:7

During a very dark time in Israel’s history, the prophet Isaiah gave his people the hope of a future King. Isaiah didn’t share what the King’s official name would be. This fact would have been helpful in recognizing Him, I think. Instead, Isaiah shares descriptive names, four names in fact.

“He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

Isaiah wasn’t announcing the coming of a great military leader or king to the anxious people. Instead, it was much more personal and intimate. He promised that God would actually send His Son.

The names provided descriptions of the various aspects of God’s character His Son would possess. There was extraordinary wisdom and comforting news for those who needed guidance in these names. For those feeling weak, they would have a Mighty God on their side. An Everlasting Father would care for His chosen people forever. Israelites weary of separation and war would have a Prince of Peace.

Which God do you need with you today? A comforter or a protector?
