John 11:17-27

Disappointment, grief, frustration all were likely feelings Martha experienced during the whirlwind days of her brother’s illness and death. Since we stand outside this story, we know that Jesus intentionally waited to visit Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. He had a plan, even if it did not make sense to the disciples or his friends.

Martha was frank with Jesus: If you had been here this wouldn’t have happened but you can still do a miracle. She wanted her brother back, understandably. Jesus, however, had a bigger plan than to simply allow Lazarus to continue living his life. Jesus wanted to tell people that He can provide the ultimate life, even if we die.

In our daily activities, the finite quality of our lives is easy to ignore. When we are confronted with our mortality, then we tend to take time to contemplate the depth of life. Jesus was clear with Martha: “I am the resurrection and life” you are looking for.
