Psalm 139:13-24

Think of someone close to you, perhaps a family member or a dear friend. Can you see his or her face in your mind clearly? If this person is someone you’ve not seen in a while, do you picture them looking the way you saw them last? Are you shocked when you see a recent photo of them? “How much they’ve changed!” you may think (doubtless they are thinking the same thing about you!).

Today’s passage is found at the end of a lengthy Psalm describing the familiarity with which God knows us: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb” (v. 13). There is no detail about ourselves that God is not aware of. He knows where we are, when we are there, and why (vv. 2-3). We can never find a place that is so far from God that He can not reach us (vv. 7-10). God knows us. He is never surprised by an updated picture of us.

When we understand and embrace the fact that God knows us better than anyone, we can lean into today’s verse. Who better to guide us than the One who knows us? Have no fear, God knows.
