Psalm 143:1-12

In my work with college students, many of them are seeking the Lord’s will at this veritable crossroad of life. Often, the search for God’s will sounds something like, “What major should I choose?” or “Which job opportunity should I take?” In a similar search years ago, a wise pastor’s counsel provided clarity: Following God’s will has less to do with what I do and more to do with who I am, in relationship with Christ.

In Pslam 143, the Psalmist prays for deliverance from persecution, while at the same time, acknowledging sovereign Lordship, submitting to God’s will and asking for guidance. “Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life . . . .” What a great reminder for us as Christians. Every day, in every circumstance, we strive for God’s will. We trust God to show us the way in which we should walk.

And there is more good news: We are not alone! God gifted us the Holy Spirit to guide us. Another example is the prayer Jesus taught his disciples: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your Kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10).
