Psalm 51:9-17

The sermons or devotions I’ve heard on this passage generally focus on the phrase “restore to me the joy of your salvation” (v. 12a). It is a key part of this verse, but as I read this passage again, the part that stood out to me was “grant me a willing spirit” (v. 12b, NRSV).

Too often God has lifted us to the mountains where we have experienced the joy of his salvation again. We feel and understand the awesomeness of his great mercy and love. We know we should “teach transgressors” his ways, but something prevents us. Are we participating in God’s work with a willing spirit? Why aren’t we sharing the Gospel with each and every person with whom we come in contact?

Oh, sisters and brothers let us pray each day for a willing spirit to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ! The power of his Holy Spirit is abiding in us. The joy of his salvation is ever lingering on the edges of our souls. Let’s put that together with a willing spirit so that we can proclaim the truth of God to those who have yet to hear and accept the Truth.
