Luke 10:25-42

When Jesus says, “Love your neighbor as yourself” he does not allow someone to draw property lines that distinguish them from another. A person does not get to decide who their neighbor might be. This is at the heart of the question that leads to this well-known parable: “Who is my neighbor?” Can I choose my neighbor?

The parable of the Good Samaritan is a story revealing that neighborliness is not defined by the borders and property lines surrounding any one person or home. Neighborliness is in the love and care shared among one another. One no more gets to choose their neighbor than they get to choose who they meet on a given day.

Every person who God brings into one’s life is a neighbor in that moment, another person we are responsible to love with the love of Christ. One does not get to choose who comes alongside them in the moment of any given day, but everyone is given the opportunity to love and serve those whom they are blessed to encounter.
