Exodus 20:1-17

Consider the humble Post-It™ note, a small square of paper with a bit of adhesive on one side. Post-It™ notes may convey simple messages, such as “please read and respond,” “due today at 5:00,” or they may be used as a simple bookmark. These uses of Post-It™ notes all have one thing in common: they help people remember.

When God gives the Ten Commandments through Moses, one of the first things Moses reads is a reminder of who is giving these commandments—much like a Post-It™ note. The fact is, people can be forgetful, but God is gracious enough to recognize this trait in us. God’s grace is also evident in the commandments themselves: they are a list of things for God’s people to do and things to avoid in order honor God and each other—reminders that relationships are important. In other parts of the Old Testament, we see God giving all kinds of reminders, ranging from festivals to telling the people to put physical reminders of God’s work on their doors and on their clothes.

What do you do to remind yourself of God’s grace in your life?
