1 Timothy 5:17—6:2

The simple truth is, by nature of being human, we all have preferences. In the morning, are you a coffee or hot tea person? Or, do you like juice with your breakfast? Do you prefer your brownies with nuts or without nuts? When you travel, do you prefer open country roads that take the longer way or would you rather join the throngs that join a super highway that moves quickly? Part of life is about making choices and these choices will demonstrate our preferences and favorites.

For Christian leaders, the charge in 1 Timothy 5:21 calls us to rise above what we prefer and look towards what God has for us. We are called to keep all of “these instructions”, regardless of whether we like them or prefer them.

Continuing maturity in Christ helps us see past our own needs and desires and see part of the glorious plan that God has laid out for all people. We are called to think beyond, feel beyond, see beyond, and go beyond the small area of our preference.
