Revelation 2:1-11

When a command is made, a sense of authority and direction is given to those who receive the command. Once the command has been given, it then becomes the responsibility of those who have received it to carry it through.

We read in Deuteronomy 15:11 that a command was given by God to the Israelites. They were to be “openhanded” with their neighbors, those living within their communities. To be openhanded is to give liberally. Those who have are to take care of those who do not have. Those who have are to give of their resources with a pure heart–expecting nothing in return.

The question may be asked, “Can we give with a pure heart if we are commanded to do so?” Yes, we can! This comes from having a heart and a mind-set that embraces the love of God each and every day. God freely gave us His Son, Jesus Christ, so that this love could be given to others with not only an open heart, but also an open hand.
