A Covenant Agreement

Deuteronomy 29:1-15

Contracts require two parties. Both must come to an agreement on the terms. Without consensus and mutual commitment, the contract is invalid.

Covenants are similar. God presents to His people a covenant agreement. His commitment to them is great. They will be His people. They will be loved, provided for, and blessed. His covenant had already begun with the deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt. It extended throughout their 40 years of wandering. In Deuteronomy 29, God asks them to reaffirm their responsibilities to the covenant. They had already been given instructions as to how they should live in order to please God. As they neared the end of their desert wanderings and prepared to enter the Promised Land, the covenant would remain. In the desert or in prosperity, God would remain the same.

Our role as God’s people is the same. We are to follow His Word. We also are covenant people through the new covenant established through Christ’s shed blood on the cross (Hebrews 9:11-15). God loves us and wants to bless us.
