John 8:1-11, 31-36

“Caught in the act,” (John 8:4) by whom? Can you see them crouching outside this woman’s hut? What did they hear and see? How long did they allow themselves to linger and lust before invading her privacy? Their obvious lack of compassion for sinners should be outweighed by the disgust at themselves. They must feel dirty in the presence of Jesus. The woman, after all, is not their priority. They couldn’t care less about her. They are after Jesus. Their question is a life and death question. Jesus life is what they are after, not the woman’s.

Jesus marks in the dirt, like doodling on paper. He knew in His spirit what they were thinking in their hearts when He said, “Let any one of you who is without sin…,” (John 8:7). The tables were turned. The religious leaders had to confront their own guilt.

The unnamed woman finally stands eye to eye with the only one capable of accusing her, yet He doesn’t. Jesus, too, has been on trial. His liberating admonition, “Go now and leave your life of sin,” sets her free.
