Isaiah 52:13—53:12

In the book of Hosea, we have read of God’s disappointment in His wayward children and the judgment that must fall upon those who turn to worship other gods.

In Isaiah 52, however, Isaiah teaches us that the judgment which must come due to our iniquities will be set upon the shoulders of the Servant. The Servant is not just taking part in our sufferings but is bearing them away. The language here is very powerful. He must be “pierced” and “crushed” and it will cause “wounds” to the one who will bear the penalty on our behalf. Too often we forget just how seriously God views our sin and the suffering it brought upon His Servant.

When we begin to forget just how severe our sin was we begin to take for granted the grace we have received. Isaiah 53:5 reminds us of how serious the sin was and the suffering that it caused. We are to live our lives in a way that glorifies God, His grace, and His peace. In other words, let us live as people who have been “healed” in His name.
