John 11:38-44

Jesus had just finished wiping his own tears away (v. 35) when he commanded others to open the tomb of Lazarus. Martha objected. It is very probable that Martha did not expect Jesus to raise her brother to life. She responds with “But, Lord” (v. 39).

How many times have we called on Christ to intervene in our lives only to respond with doubt? “I know your power, Lord, but this marriage is dead.” Or “I know you have cattle on a thousand hills, Lord, but my finances are dead.” We really like holding back some reservation about whether God can truly bring about change or miracles.

It was then that Jesus reminded Martha of his promise: this event would bring glory to God, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” (v. 40) It seems that Jesus is saying that our faith is somehow part of the process of bringing dead things back to life!

Today, Lord, give me the faith to move beyond my own doubts and see the “glory of God” in everything you do.
