John 10:40-42; 11:1-7

We’ve all probably experienced the sickness and/or death of a loved one. Perhaps you are going through something similar right now. Lazarus had two devoted sisters who sent word to Jesus on his behalf. In John 10, verse 3, they say, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” Instead of telling their Lord how much they loved Lazarus, they spoke of how much he loved him.

“This sickness will not end in death” (v. 4), is a powerful reminder to those of us who are saved by grace. Even if our bodies give out and succumb to illness, we will not suffer unto the second death. Instead, our souls will be made alive in Christ! Philippians 1:20-22 tells us, to die is to gain eternal life with Christ. While the death of a loved one leaves us with a longing and an empty place, knowing we will one day spend eternity with them, brings hope to our hurting hearts.

The next time we petition God for our sick loved ones, let’s take comfort knowing he loves them and Jesus will be glorified.
