Forsaken?

In his extremity on the cross, Jesus echoed David’s words in Psalm 22:1: “. . . why have you forsaken me?” His divine nature did not leave, but in his human consciousness he felt lost.

Have you ever felt forsaken?

Sometimes God calls us to a difficult task. He called Abraham to walk up a mountain with his son, firewood strapped to the lad’s back. He sent Jonah into enemy territory. He called Peter to cross cultural boundaries with the gospel.

Today he is still calling persons to serve in places that are not popular. As a 12-year-old, I mentioned my missionary call to my peers at camp. I vividly recall the strong retort of a fellow preteen: “Well, you can waste your life if you want but not me!” The words stung. I even felt a little forsaken. But I was faithful to the call, and God has blessed me and my family above and beyond anything we could ask or think!

You see, the Christian story never ends at the cross.
