Zechariah or John?

RG AUDIO 120611Luke 1:57-66

The High Priest Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth were devout followers of God and were respected by their neighbors. Despite their age and inability to conceive, the miraculous happened: Elizabeth gave birth to a son.

Conflict arose, though. People wanted to name the baby after his father Zechariah, but Elizabeth thought the name “John” would be was better. She wanted to name him “John” because she believed that the Holy Spirit would come upon the baby and the power of the Most High would overshadow him.

We were not born by accident. We were all born, like John, with a purpose and calling. Our identity is not of human lineage. Rather, we come from heavenly lineage. To accept our calling will often mean we will reject the wishes of other, well-meaning people. We can have faith, though, that God’s hand and mercy will always guide us.
