RG AUDIO 1101Joshua 1:1-9
Forty plus years was a long time to be Moses’ right-hand man. Joshua likely exercised a good deal of authority and handled many things on his own. Nonetheless, Moses was always there, in charge, and available for advice. As Moses aged and the desert wanderings neared their end, Joshua had to know Moses would soon die and the responsibility would fall on his shoulders. That thought would give most of us sleepless nights!
Upon Moses’ death, the Lord came to Joshua with clear commands: get up, go into the land and walk it over, be strong and courageous, follow the Law, talk about the Law continually, meditate on the Law, and be careful to be obedient. With the instructions God gave precious enablings and promises: you cannot be withstood, I will be with you, I will not leave you, I will not forsake you, I will make your way prosperous, and you will have success.
God knew the responsibilities of Joshua’s new role could frighten and dismay him into inaction and ineffectiveness. So he concluded Joshua’s assignment with a spectacular promise—I will be with you—Moses may be gone but I am not! That promise holds true for us today.
