When she stepped into the Pastoral Care Department I assumed she was five or six years old. She had been crying but now tried to appear confident.

“Is my mommy here?” she asked.

“What’s your mommy’s name, dear?”

“Monique. Our neighbor said they took her to the hospital. Is this the hospital?”

“Yes. If she’s here we’ll find her. What is her last name?”

“I can’t remember: it’s not the same as mine,” she said matter-of-factly.

While waiting for the admissions nurse, I asked, “Is there someone else we could call?

Her eyes grew wide as she answered in words that still echo in my heart: “Without my mommy, I don’t belong to nobody. [sic]”

The key words in our text today are, “consecrate (“sanctify,” KJV) yourselves.” They mean, “Separate yourselves from all other ownership and belong exclusively to the One who is Holy.”
