Psalm 49
“Kidnapped for Ransom!” This headline is often emblazoned above stories of people taken hostage by bandits to obtain money for their release. From piracy on the high seas to abductions on city streets, such crimes against humanity are punishable by law. There is also the anxiety on the part of family and friends forced to yield up fortunes for their release. Slave trade of all kinds, past and present, are motivated by such mercenary ends.
Psalm 49 talks of the whole human race taken captive, kidnapped by death, with no one wealthy enough to pay the ransom.
However, Christ has done for the whole race what even the wealthiest person on earth could not do for a single soul. “For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed . . . but with the precious blood of Christ” (1 Pet. 1:18-19).
