Measuring Up

Genesis 40:16-23

Measuring up to God’s standard is intimidating. We know ourselves better than anyone else. We know our selfish tendencies, our grumpiness, our timidity, our brashness. We lean closely to the mirror and see every imperfection of our character.

The call to integrity can cause us to question our ability to draw near to God. We ask honest questions like, “What do I need to do to be accepted by God?” And so we begin listing all our righteous acts. “I go to church. I give a tithe. I pray for the missionaries. I don’t pass notes in church! I hope this all impresses God.”

Micah reminds us that none of our religious activities impress God. In fact, our acceptability before Him is the result of the Holy Spirit’s activity in our hearts. He enables us to treat people like He would. We do what is right and are merciful with those who don’t. Moreover, we stay humble while we embrace the fact that our right living is only possible because God walks with us.
