Psalm 96:1-7

The message of scripture is occasionally directed to individuals (Abraham, Deborah, Timothy). Sometimes its words are to families, clans, or other groups (Jacob’s descendants, the tribe of Judah, the church at Ephesus). And, at times the message is directed to whole nations (Israel, Egypt, Babylon). There are even some texts that are addressed to the whole earth. While we know that: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17), we would be wise to give heed to those messages addressed to everyone.

Psalm 96 is an exhortation to “all the earth.” It is a call to sing forth the praise of the Lord. The themes of our praise are the Lord’s salvation, His glory and marvelous deeds. While each of us has our own unique story, our own list of challenges, failures and successes, we have one thing in common: our Father in heaven. He created us, loves us, and redeems us.
