James 5:13-20

Jessica was five years old. The tears were just beginning to well up in her eyes when she saw her mom. She had only been lost in the supermarket for about three minutes, but it seemed like an eternity. Her mother had been engaged in conversation with a friend from church when Jessica had followed a woman wearing the same sneakers and blue trousers as her mother down the bread and cereals aisle. When she realized her mistake, Jessica walked back toward where she had left her mother but she was nowhere to be found. That’s when she turned around and headed back up the aisle where she would meet her mother coming the other way. When she found her, her mother asked anxiously, “Why didn’t you call out for me? I wasn’t far away.” Jessica replied, “I didn’t want anyone to know I was lost.”

How often does our pride keep us from admitting that we are lost, that we have gone astray? Our fear of appearing vulnerable can keep us from the reaping the benefits of confession. James reminds us of the promise that a loving, Christian community will rescue those who wander.
