Hebrews 9:7-15

In the days of the temple, the high priest entered the Holy of Holies once a year to sprinkle blood for the pardon of sins. While the sacrifices brought forgiveness, they did not bring transformation. The writer of Hebrews points to Jesus as a better version of the sacrifice. God’s intention is not only the forgiveness of sins, but also power over sin. We can be washed, made holy, and be changed by the blood of Jesus.

Going through rituals can make us feel or look clean on the outside but do little to remedy the inside. We can show up to worship gatherings, volunteer in the nursery, give a tenth of our income, and remain unchanged, looking little like Jesus. Or we can serve the living God who cleans us fully and makes us new. God changes our hearts and minds, making us more like Jesus.

Are we surrendering ourselves to the power of Jesus or are we seeking forgiveness without transformation? Are we in this to avoid punishment or in this to experience full life in Christ?
