Matthew 12:9-21

The instances when Jesus heals or performs other miracles and then instructs the receivers of the miracle to “not tell anyone” are intriguing. Such is the case here in Matthew 12 as He heals the shriveled hand of a man and then heals others in the large crowd. We know nothing else about this man. Who is he? What has he done with his life? What does he do now that he is healed? Does he pursue a belief in Christ? Does he even say thank you? And what of the others that are healed on that day?

While our minds are still pursuing these miracles, Matthew ties our imagination to the prophet Isaiah whose words reveal that the activity and the intention of Christ on earth is connected to the concept of justice. The justice of God is good news for those who are harmed, hurt, and bound by the broken systems and sins of the world.

As the people of God, we must wrestle with how the same passion for justice that was in Christ also flows within us. We must wrestle with what the justice of Jesus looks like. How does that justice reveal itself through our activity and our proclamation of Christ and His love?
