In spite of the king’s demand, the Lord’s servant, Balaam, held fast to what he believed to be right. It can be tough to say no to such power. Yet Balaam knew that human power is no match for the wisdom and blessing of God. Even though King Balak sent money and multiple messengers, Balaam took the time to stop and seek God’s counsel.
King Balak persisted as he sent even higher-ranking messengers. Balaam’s response is notable: He replied that even if the king gave him all of his money, he could not ignore the command of God. However, Balaam prayed again. His response to the messengers was never in anger or mockery, just a simple response that he could only do as God said.
For some reason, the message Balaam received from God that night was different. He was allowed to go with them, but with the reminder to always do only what God says.
Listening to God certainly takes intentionality. Our goal is to be constantly ready to act on the word of God.
