Deuteronomy 4:32-40

Our Lord’s claim to sovereignty may strike a jarring note in today’s society where tolerance is the dominant virtue. Many contend that there are many gods and many pathways to the divine. From the beginning, however, God declared himself the one and only. He refused to share either his glory or his people with another.

His jealousy does not grow out of insecurity, covetousness, or spite, as ours usually does. It is the by-product of his absolute sovereignty, infinite holiness, and covenantal love. He is not envious of his children’s accomplishments or possessions, but communicates his strong love in language we can understand.

The tie between God and his people is comparable to the relationship of a husband and wife to each other. As his church we are pledged to him as a bride for the bridegroom.
