The Caring Christ

Luke 9:1-17

Have you ever been so wrapped up in something that you lost track of time? When playing outside as a kid, this always happened to me.

Jesus called the 12 disciples together and gave them the authority and ability to perform great works of ministry. As they traveled preaching the gospel, miraculously they could heal the sick and cast out demons. Their ministry was spectacular.

On one occasion, the disciples were with Jesus completing a day of ministry. There had been large crowds gathered to hear the teachings of Christ and witness his healing powers. Time got away; and before they realized it; night was fast approaching. Jesus knew the people were hungry and told the disciples, “You give them something to eat.”

It is not surprising that we are quick to associate ministry with the spectacular when often the greatest ministry is simply meeting the basic needs of people. Today, Jesus may need us to give what we have and share it with others.
