Todos necesitamos a Dios

Romans 3:21-26.

Today’s reading is a part of what has been called for many years the Roman Road to Salvation and for good reason. Innumerable people have come to saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through several standout verses in the book, including today’s key verse.

It is easy, then, to lose sight of the context of this letter, of Paul writing to a church being torn asunder by tension between Jewish and Gentile Christians. Paul is faced with the formidable challenge of helping both groups see themselves, and one another, rightly. All are in need of God’s saving action in equal measure, and all are invited to the family table regardless of any previously disqualifying factors.

Considering the sharp divisions currently wreaking havoc in our countries, communities, and churches, what might Paul’s message have to say to us? Do we engage with one another in total humility, in full recognition of our neediness before the Lord? Do we actively resist the temptation to categorize, gatekeep, and exclude those who we might deem are falling shorter of the glory of God than ourselves?

What is the Spirit of God saying to our churches today? To us, the body of Christ?
