James 1:1-12.
My family served as missionaries for several years and helped coordinate mission teams. Often, we would hear something along the lines of: « They have nothing, but they are still so happy. » The assumption is that having worldly possessions equals security, happiness, and status. The reality is that money and worldly possessions do not buy happiness or security.
Today’s scripture says that in God’s kingdom, worldly possessions are not how you get status either. Over and over Christ reminds us that the last shall be first and the first shall be last; you will find riches in heaven in losing everything on earth; the greatest is found in serving others. All these things are the opposite of what was commonly practiced and desired both during Jesus’s time and today.
James 1:9 tells us that those in humble circumstances should take pride in their high position. What would happen if instead of seeking after more possessions, we invested in eternal things? What if we spent our time, energy, and resources on helping find God, instead of acquiring the latest and greatest electronic gadget, vacation, or car?
Today, seek first to love God—and not worldly possessions.
