Different Power

July 15th, 2025

Acts 1:6-11.

This passage begins with the disciples, once again, not understanding Jesus’ purpose. They wanted Him to bring political power back to their people (v. 6). Jesus patiently redirected their focus. They would receive power, but it would not be the kind of power with which they were familiar. It would be power brought by the Holy Spirit to be witnesses (v. 8).

What does this mean? To be witnesses to a God who sacrificed himself out of love for us means we live with a willingness to sacrifice. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can do that! In Ephesians 1:18-20, Paul prays for God’s people to understand that kind of power. In 2 Corinthians 12:9, we read of God’s power being perfected in weakness.

God’s power is not just a bigger version of our power. God’s power is connected to love, sacrifice, and healing. So, when we read about Jesus’ ascension to heaven and knowing that someday, He will return, we understand our responsibility as witnesses is to live in the Spirit’s power.

We are empowered by the Spirit to live a life of love, sacrifice, and healing. How can you live in that power today?
