King of all Nations

July 8th, 2025

Zechariah 14:9-15.

Our passage today opens with a key theme in the book of Zechariah: The Lord is king over the whole earth. He will be the only Lord and His name the only name.

The details of the plague facing Jerusalem’s enemies are unsettling and make one feel as if they have entered into the middle of a horror story (vv. 12-13). While it is difficult for modern readers to imagine the one true King of the earth striking people down in such a gruesome way, to the people of Israel, this passage would have served as a powerful reminder that Jerusalem had not been forgotten. They would be lifted up and protected while their enemies faced punishment and plunder. The Lord had not abandoned them and had been, is now, and will forever be worthy of their praise.

Later, we read that the survivors of this terrible plague were actually invited to join in the everlasting worship of the one true King (v. 16): They too were not abandoned! Together with the psalmist, all nations can proclaim: “For the LORD Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth. . . . Sing praises to our King” (Psalm 47:2, 6)!
