Psalm 30:1-6

In biblical times, it was a customary practice for Jews to dedicate new buildings to the Lord. Psalm 30 is a song for the dedication of the temple.

David starts this song with adoration and praise to God for deliverance in his life. Right away, David lists examples of personal deliverance: “I will exalt you, LORD, for you lifted me out of the depths” (v. 1). “I called to you for help, and you healed me” (v. 2). “You, LORD, brought me up from the realm of the dead; you spared me from going down to the pit” (v. 3).

David may be one of the best motivational speakers ever! David revealed the nature of his heart in the way he looked back on his past. The road had not been easy for David, and he could have focused on all his challenges and misfortunes. Instead, David chose to see God’s presence in and help through all the experiences of his life.

Acknowledging God’s presence in our past is an important discipline for us to adopt. Acknowledging God in the past gives us new eyes to see our future.
