Relinquish Our Pride

July 4th, 2024

Luke 4:1-8

I think it is a great comfort to have a Savior who understands what it means to be human and to be tempted. Of course, Jesus is perfect, but He knows what hunger and thirst feel like. He understands and can empathize with our struggles as humans, even if He never succumbed to that temptation.

When Jesus was in the desert for 40 days, the devil came to Him and offered the entire world on a platter. It was a deception, because anything the devil could have offered already belongs to the Lord, but definitely a tempting deception. Yet, being given the splendor of “all the kingdoms of the world” would have made Jesus’ life a lot easier. He would not have had to die on the cross; He could have had it all and kept His position.

Ultimately, though, being in service to God asks us to relinquish our pride. We are asked to give up our sense of control and self to submit to the plans God has made for us, ones that are far better than anything we can think to do on our own power…trusting and serving with a pure heart.
