Love Others

Luke 6:27-36
She was in charge of the university office she had worked at for several years. Every student had to come through the office in order to graduate, and she was the manager of it all. She was also despised by the majority of her employees.
Sandy was not an easy boss to work with. She would take advantage of her salaried position, regularly showing up to work an hour or two late. She spoke unkindly to staff, talking down to many of those under her management.
I struggled with my time in Sandy’s office. I got along with her well enough, but could see where the staff was unhappy with her. It was hard to not join in the complaining behind her back; her actions did not endear her to anyone.
Jesus points out the problem in my situation: “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them” (v. 32). Ouch. When we love only those who are easy to love, we should hold off congratulating ourselves, because even sinners do that.
True love’s strength is found in loving the enemy, the one who can’t pay you back, the one who is different.
