Humble Courage

April 19th, 2024

Philippians 1:18b-26

Before his conversion, Paul was quite arrogant as he pursued Christians in the newly birthed church. Perhaps this is why we read such self-deprecating words from him in his letters. I don’t believe this is because Paul lacked self-confidence after he met Christ. It’s that his focus changed. He made every effort to point others to Christ and the power of God.

Paul saw the people of God as an extension of Jesus Christ himself. The church is the incarnation of Christ in the world. Paul also knew of his own faults and didn’t try to deny them.

In this world, there will be a temptation to break under the pressure of the moment. We must be vigilant to put our full faith and trust in Jesus Christ, who will help us stand strong in the face of the temptation to look toward another power source.

When we do survive the tests of life with the supernatural courage that only God can provide, the name of Jesus Christ will be lifted up. Just like Paul, we will be pointing others to Christ and not ourselves.
