Faith and Expectation

1 Corinthians 15:9-15a

In the movie Breakthrough, Christian actress and singer Chrissy Metz gave a moving portrayal of Joyce Smith, a mother whose athletic high-schooler fell through the ice on Lake Saint Louis in Missouri. Her son was pronounced dead. As she went in to say goodbye, she cried out to the Lord, and He brought her son back to life.

Paul points out that if Jesus has not been raised from the dead, then we have no hope. Those who do not believe in resurrection practice a faithless theology. Joyce put her faith in Christ’s death and resurrection.

God has more for us than this short life. My generation is at the age of looking back over our lives and looking forward to the resurrection. Our faith, anchored in the resurrection of Jesus, is full of hope and expectation.

Paul’s argument was evidenced that day when Joyce called out to God over her son. Joyce’s faith came from the evidence of the resurrection of Jesus. Because Jesus lives, we have hope for eternal life.
