Love Over Legalism

March 1st, 2024

Galatians 5:1-6

Life is ordered by rules. Most of us are comfortable with some degree of black and white. The objective of rules is to make society orderly.

The church is also ordered, but not in the same way that our daily lives are. Yes, we have the Ten Commandments, and we are given instructions on how to live a holy life. Treating God’s commands as rules, though, is what has led the church down the path of legalism.

So, what is the difference? Rules must be followed by all regardless of how one feels about them. God’s commands are different because they are given in love and obeyed out of love. Our salvation is not dependent on keeping a certain set of rules. It is dependent on faith alone in Christ and in His faithfulness to God’s redemption plan.

God’s love preserves us and protects us as we put our faith in God’s saving grace. This common faith born out of love is what binds us together.
