Unique and Unified

February 27th, 2024

1 Corinthians 1:10-17

If we are united in Christ, why is there so much division in the church? We sometimes offer the world an embarrassing look into our dysfunctional family. The truth is believers do argue and disagree about politics, worship styles, leadership, and a thousand other things.

“This is normal,” you say. People are not all the same, so we will certainly disagree! Yes. However, where we show the world the height of our dysfunction is in the way we choose to disagree.

Paul uses the word “division” here, not “disagreement.” Division by its very definition causes people to take sides. It is destructive. Worse, it destroys our Christian witness when the church that declares unity is rife with division. Our diversity brings us the richness of God’s creation.

While we each bring our own opinions and perspectives, we must leave room to “disagree Christianly.” How do we do that? Paul teaches we can avoid divisions by having the mind and attitudes of Christ.
