Walking Together

1 John 1:1-17
“God is light; in him there is no darkness at all” (v. 5). In the same way, believers cannot indulge in the sins of the world and live as people of light.
Our lives will not produce obedient fruit apart from walking in God’s light. We expect John to declare that such walking leads to fellowship with God based on verse 6, but instead, he says it leads to fellowship with one another. John is proclaiming that fellowship within our faith community is inseparable from fellowship with God; we can’t have one without the other. To be holy is to live in right relationship with both God and each other.
We must abide together in the One who unites and cleanses us. Such communal rootedness can open up avenues of radical accountability when we make false claims like those found in 1 John 1. It also enables us to walk together “before God in the light of life” as people who have been “delivered . . . from death” (Psalm 56:13).
