Be Careful How You Build

December 26th, 2023

1 Corinthians 3:8-17

First Corinthians 3 brings to mind the old story of the Three Little Pigs. Maybe you remember it: Three pigs each build a house out of different building materials. One pig builds with straw, one with sticks, and one builds with bricks. All goes well for the pigs until the Big Bad Wolf comes. With his huffing and puffing, he makes short work of the first two houses. They are shown for what they are—short, easy solutions that don’t stand up to the wolf.

1 Corinthians 3 calls us to be careful how we build the “houses” of our lives. Indeed, how each of us builds will be shown for what it is (v. 12). Building a house that will stand up against life’s Big Bad Wolves takes time, discipline, and a whole lot of work. It’s not the easy path. It doesn’t produce quick results. The construction doesn’t follow a tidy, efficient formula.

But when the fire, or the Big Bad Wolf, tests the quality of our work, we’ll be glad we didn’t take shortcuts.
