Holy Hundred Miles

December 11th, 2023

Luke 1:39-45

This past summer Rachel and her husband hiked St. Patrick’s Way in northern Ireland. It was a time of great healing, great promise, and great peace. All the thoughts of a difficult year were obscured by the marvelous journey underway. It was a week-long, holy hundred-mile experience. In the end, Chad was there to celebrate with Rachel. That made it all the more spectacular.

Mary, a teenage girl, traversed the dusty Middle Eastern roads for nearly 100 miles to see her cousin Elizabeth. Along the way, I wonder what she wondered. Did she revisit every holy encounter of the past few months? Did she imagine what it would be like to hold this miracle-made Messiah in her arms? Did she pre-play in her mind the conversation to come with her cousin, moving her lips to explanations of her heart?

Scripture doesn’t fill in all the gaps. It rarely does. What we do know is she hurried in expectation, and she was not disappointed. Elizabeth believed and was there to celebrate with her! We can also join in the celebration today. Praise God! The Messiah is arriving.
