The Good Shepherd Is Just

November 1st, 2023

Ezekiel 34:17-24

Have you ever met a bully at church? They are often wonderful people who mean well. They’re the ones who like to get the job done, whatever it is. They especially like things done their way. To them, there are only two ways to do things: their way or the wrong way. Sometimes, they go too far.

God distinguishes between the bullies and the true leaders. He judges the hearts and actions of all. He declares through His prophets that He will personally ensure the salvation of His people. When Ezekiel wrote this, the immediate political and spiritual solution was found in making David Israel’s king. The bullies would not win out then, and they won’t succeed today.

God may not always seem fair (blessing everyone the same way), but He’s always just. He does exactly what He says He’ll do. Therefore, we should not always seek to get our way, but rather, seek to be led by the God who will judge our thoughts, actions, and motives. We should be careful to only entrust leadership to just shepherds.
