There Can Be Repentance

October 25th, 2023

Ezekiel 18:19-24

If we were looking for a bumper sticker slogan for the gospel, this is it: “There can be repentance!” This is the Christian message of good news. We aren’t on a road that has no exit ramps. Those who turn from their sins to Jesus find life. We believers are called to continually turn from ourselves to Jesus.

Repentance is a life-long practice for Christians. It’s not groveling over past sins and failures, but the humility of heart to see that we must continually choose Christ and His way. John Wesley said in his powerful sermon, “The Repentance of Believers,” that we who are pursuing the way of holiness and entire sanctification are called to recognize that there is more of our lives to give over to God. We haven’t yet been made fully whole. We are utterly dependent upon God’s grace to save us and make us holy.

For those who have wandered away in selfishness and pride, there can be repentance! New life, eternal life is found in turning around to God.

Repentance isn’t the same as “to grow in grace and faith.” Repentance is turning away from intentional sinning. Therefore, Repentance isn’t necessary as a life-long practice, unless your life- long practice is sinning. Upon intentionally breaking one of God’s Known laws, Repentance becomes necessary no matter the condition of the heart: saved, sanctified, or unbeliever.

I believe the author was meaning that we should always be mindful of our actions through the leading of the Holy Spirit and be ready to turn away from actions and attitudes that lead us away from God.
