Sweet As Honey

October 17th, 2023

Ezekiel 3:1-7

As a young kid I remember being dared by a friend to try eating a piece of paper. Why? I could not begin to tell you, other than the fact that human brains don’t fully develop until the age of 25. I did not want to back down from the dare and so I actually ate a small corner of a piece of paper.

Ezekiel said that the scroll he ate tasted as sweet as honey in his mouth. That was not the experience I had with the piece of paper I ate! This is because Ezekiel is using the imagery of eating a scroll, not in the literal sense. Ezekiel’s vision is an expression of God’s word filling him.

Ezekiel was given the words of God to speak, not his own. The words given were that of “lament and mourning and woe.” In essence, God is spilling out His heart to Ezekiel just as a friend sharing a deep wound with another friend. This level of intimacy with God is available to all who will take the time to “consume” God’s word and grow in relationship with Him.
