Humility and Jesus
September 9th, 2023
Philippians 2:1-8
Jesus once advised a group of honor seekers on how to act at a banquet. In short He said, don’t try to grab the best seat at the table. It might be reserved for another. In embarrassment you may have to take whatever seat you can find. Jesus summed up, “For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted” (Luke 14:11).
We Christians are called to be self-giving, not self-serving. Jesus is our great example. Laying aside the honor and glory of heaven, He put on humanity. His suffering was extreme, enduring the awful sense of being forsaken by His Father. Yet, by His death Jesus secured our redemption.
Since Jesus is our example we must lay aside selfish ambition and empty pride. Advancing the kingdom of God is our goal. Working well with others is how we go about it. We may work behind the scenes helping others discover and use their spiritual gifts. God knows and He will not forget our loving service.
