Pride’s Deadly Consequence

September 6th, 2023

2 Chronicles 26:16-23

Power is particularly dangerous when it is controlled by sinful pride. We have the power to do so much. Our power is directed by our will. If our will is guided by self, sin enters in. Think about Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3). God gave them broad dominion and autonomy. Yet, how did they use it? They ate the fruit of the one tree forbidden to them. That is the very essence of sin.

Why do we do it? Consider Uzziah. God gave him great power and success. As king few things were forbidden to him. One area was reserved for the descendants of Aaron—service in the temple of the Lord. When Uzziah was confronted for usurping the priestly role what did he do? Repent? No. He became angry. While raging at the priests he was afflicted with leprosy

Power always has consequences. When combined with selfish pride sin is the inevitable result.
