We Are Not Immune To Arrogance
July 30th, 2023
Luke 18:9-14
As believers, we are called to humility and surrender to God’s will and ways. We are all on the same journey, but if we are not careful, a spiritual arrogance can set in. We may begin to believe that we have achieved a spiritual level that others have not.
Arrogance is not only being satisfied with where you are spiritually, it is believing yourself to be in a spiritual place you are not. Luke 18 tells us about two people. The first was a Pharisee, who was arrogant, disdaining those whom he believed were at a “lesser” spiritual level than himself. The other person, a tax collector, was aware of his sin and in complete humility, bowed down before the mercy of God.
Real spiritual progress is taking a sober inventory of our actions and realizing our sin before God. To be like Christ, we must continue to take a spiritual inventory of our own attitudes so that the Holy Spirit can root out all spiritual pride and arrogance.
