Surrendered Words

Proverbs 10:27-32
How do you recognize a Spirit-filled Christian? Proverbs reminds us that one way is by the words Christians use and how they use them. Make no mistake, our words either come from God or they come from our own ideas, hurts, misunderstandings, and anger. Proverbs says that we can tell the difference. We can see it on the faces of people who receive our words.
It takes at least five positive words to overcome the damage of one negative word. Television sitcoms lie to us here. They build their scripts on comedic put-downs and hardly ever show the wounds they cause.
Why do we think that negative words, angry words, shouted words, belittling words will bring anyone help? We must remember that our surrender to Christ included the surrender of our words and why we say them. Since there is no rewind or erase to easily retrieve careless words, we ask the Holy Spirit to be our gatekeeper. Let the words of my mouth . . . be pleasing to you becomes our prayer.
