A Generational Choice

June 11th, 2023

Joshua 24:14-18

Each of us grows up with various spiritual influences in our lives. My grandmother always said she was “born a Baptist,” but never spoke of a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus. My father grew up attending Roman Catholic parochial schools. My mother was sent to the Baptist Sunday School classes. Neither of my parents professed to know the Lord, but seeds were planted. My father claimed to be agnostic, but asked me to pray for my grandfather when he was dying. My mother told me that we went to church for a “moral education.” For years, she enjoyed the adult Sunday School because the teacher encouraged a lively discussion and let her ask questions and helped her find answers. Their children had to choose to serve the Lord Jesus.

So it is with each generation. We all must hear the words of God through Scripture: “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve” (Joshua 24:15). God asks us to make a choice. As Jesus said, in Mark 8:34, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
