The First Gift of the Spirit
May 22nd, 2023
Acts 2:1-13
As “Spirit” people, Acts 2 is pretty important to us.
When the Holy Spirit falls on the day of Pentecost, the Spirit comes bearing gifts. I am reminded the Spirit did not come bringing gifts of healing or discernment, nor were they gifts of apologetics or rhetoric.
No, the first gift of the Spirit described in Acts 2 is the gift of languages. The first gift given on the birthday of the Church is one that turns outsiders into insiders. Folks from all over the known world, representing a myriad of cultures, races, and languages “heard their own language being spoken” (v. 6).
We must not miss this vitally important point: the first gift of the Spirit to the newly formed Church of Jesus is one that broke down barriers between people, creating a space for the kingdom to break-in, and for lives to be changed. As “Spirit” people, we must cooperate with where this particular wind is blowing.
May we be known as barrier-breaking people!
